Year III Semester I: Portrait Anatomy and Drawing

Take your portraiture to a new level! Using Graphite learn how to build from a skull, to muscles to facial expression a likeness. End the semester drawing a self portrait. The have some fun drawing caricatures and designing a Christmas Card in the tradition of Norman Rockwell.  Learn a new technique of portraiture by identifying shadow shapes with a master copy of Sargent.  Lastly diving into cast drawing and drawing a portrait from an old photo, maybe even of a grand parent.

A few more words about this course

Using graphite materials you've already acquired in Year 1, you will learn all different types of portraiture in this course.  From Anatomy, to Caricature, to Illustrative, to Master Portraiture, Cast Drawing and Classical Portraiture, this course takes you through it all in an engaging and meaningful way. Many of us want to draw portraits and are intimidated by it.  By the end of this course you will draw in a way you never thought you could. 
Projects in this course
  • Inside Out Portrait:  A Four part Drawing series in which you draw a portrait using Geometric Essence, the Skull, then layering the muscles and lastly the natural portrait of a man's face.
  • Caricature: Learn how to distill a persons face and the history of caricature.
  • Caricature as a pirate or animal
  • A Charles Dickens Christmas Card: Design a Christmas Card in the style of Norman Rockwell
  • Sargent Master Copy - learn a new technique of identifying shadow shape to draw portraits 
  • Cast Drawing: Combine all the skills learned this semester to draw from a cast
  • Classical Portrait Drawing: Draw a portrait of one of your ancestors using an old photo.
